What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan

What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan What Can You Uncover in a 6 Second Resume Scan Of course, there are many recruiters out there who have the luxury of having 4 or 5 minutes to assess a resume, but many others will be time pressurized and overwhelmed with applicants, many of which they know will leid be a match for the job. Many rely on this superficial firstround speed sift to eliminate time wasters and quickly ring-fence promising applicants.Of course, the truth is that there will be a lot of collateral damage from using this 6 second scan, (meaning talent may be senfgas in the first round), but it is an unavoidable reality for many, and recruiters simply have to make do. So, what useful information can be uncovered in a superficial 6 second scan that jettisons ill fitting applicants and leaves most of the quality intact? I have outlined a few belowThere are several signs of job advert spamming that I think can be spotted in a split second by scanning your email inbox , and the most surefire sign of that for me is an application submitted within hours of the job being posted and one that doesnt contain a cover letter, especially if asked for. Its very likely that this is a spam application where the applicant has probably not looked much beyond the job description when applying for the role. There is a small chance of fit, and this resume may be safely passed over.If you are really focused on attention to detail, thoroughness and rule following, include specific application instructions in the job description, such as they must start the email, subject header with a particular code word. If they fail to follow unterstellung criteria, youd have to be concerned whether they were the right fit. These two types of inbox screening can help you sift a large proportion of time wasters within 2 or 3 seconds, probably allowing you a little extra time to scan the resume. So, what can you uncover within the resume itself? Resumes that are well structured, wit h clearly delineated sections, and which make appropriate use of bold headings and indents, short sentences and bullet points indicate that the candidate understands the importance of presentation and that they may have a more organized mind. (Even if it was prepared by a resume writer, it at least shows they understand the importance of presentation and readability and that they know their own limitations). A cluttered or less clear resume, which can be judged in a 2-second glance is most likely a no fit. While the summary section is important, TheLadders study showed that recruiters focus in on current and previous job title/position and employment dates during the crucial 6 seconds. So, if job titles dont match your position on offer and dates are a little wonky, the candidate is clearly a weaker match and ready for your maybe or reject pile.As well as relevancy, youll be looking for signs of dynamism and effectiveness, which could be concise sentences starting with actions words l ike, created, improved, increased, and with numbers, dollar values or percentages associated. You may also spot typos, (although you might not come across one in a 6 second scan) but they can be an indication of carelessness, not using a spell-checker, being a bad speller etc., and if you have a zero-tolerance policy of spelling and grammar, this is also a great second scan criterion. So, as you can see, it is possible (although not advised) for recruiters to make a superficial but partially meaningful assessment of resumes within 6 seconds.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Worse, you are hurting your chances of getting hired before you started lookingThis post explains how you can stop damaging your confidence during a grueling job search.Stop devaluing your career success on a resumeStop focusing on the negative times in your job career and letting that spill over into your resume. Eventually, you will start think of yourself as a fraud who does notlage deserve success. You will cheapen your resume by not adding your top accomplishments. Additionally, you will start explaining away your success, so no one sees the value in it.For example, we critiqued a resume at Find My Profession with the following sentence. We requested the job seeker remove it immediat ely. Read if you can understand what makes this resume content harmful to a job candidates chancesLed a team of 50 during a successful $30 million-dollar merger with this company. It was never completed due to this company filing for bankruptcy. The person essentially stated, Look at this great success I am proud of and this is why it does not matter.Do not devalue your career success by explaining why it was not that great to you.Stop asking yourself random negative questionsThese questions sound a little like these questions belowWhy do I even bother? Why am I not passionate about anything?Do I even have the relevant skills to perform this job?How do I keep up with all the changes? You have no answer to these questions. The more you take action, the less you think about them.Stop fearing possible strugglesIt seems like everyone else always knows what to do and what they want. They seem to always have it easy. Right?Wrong. Everyone goes through a struggle on the path to job success. So me hide their stress better than others when struggling while others pretend as if they knew what they were doing all along.Thats nonsense. Anyone who has ever bootstrapped a startup into a successful company knows the struggle to succeed is real.Fearing a possible struggle awaits you in a job search may just lead you to take a job you will eventually hate because it was a safe thing to do.Stop being the ultimate perfectionistIf new technology, social media, and todays job market have proven one thing, it is thisYou do not have to be perfect to get ahead in your careerEverything is imperfect because times are always changing. That job which felt like a perfect career choice 5 years ago now lacks opportunity for new challenges.Staying addicted to being perfect hurts your ability to take risks, look into new careers, and communicate with others. Why? When you always fear that something is not a perfect job, you label the job as imperfect and stop learning about the job opportunities it provides.Stop thinking any solution to your job search is extremeTrue success in your job search comes through achieving a balance. You want to be honest with yourself, but not to the point of saying no to everything. You want to be open-minded, but not to the point of appearing delusional or ending up in the first job that agrees to hire you.Stop thinking your job search has to be an extreme experience. It is merely the start of finding what you wish to do next.Start following your curiosityContrary to what everyone in entrepreneur, career, or life coaching has said over the last 20 years, it is better to follow your curiosity before following your passion. Your job search will be better this way. Why? Curiosity is the root cause of all passion. No one knows what they want to do, all of the time. No one wakes up instantly passionate about something. They first became curious and next decided to investigate. Upon investigation and taking action, a passion was discovered.Start being cur ious and you stop beating yourself up over what you do not know. Will you always have the relevant skills to perform a job? No. Some job skills may sound similar compared to 10 years ago, but the tools used to perform them have changed.Go be curious and find out how and why.

Update of Popular SES Jobseekers Guidebook Just Released by Kathryn Troutman

Update of Popular SES Jobseekers Guidebook Just Released by Kathryn Troutman Update of Popular SES Jobseekers Guidebook Just Released by Kathryn Troutman Update of Popular SES Jobseekers Guidebook Just Released by Kathryn Troutman Are you considering SES for 2016? This book is a MUST for writing your SES application package. Released this month on www.resume-place.com,  The New SES Application, 2nd Edition, delivers up-to-date info and proven strategies to deal with the Feds complicated Senior Executive Service applications. The complex SES application process is a big hurdle for busy executives to jump over. And it’s become even more challenging with all the options available to agencies for Senior Executive Service application formats under recent reforms. In her 2nd edition of the best-selling book on the topic, The New SES Application ($21.95), Federal Resume Guru Kathryn Troutman and her co-author Diane Hudson cut to the chase by giving applicants a jumping off point that gets them immediately on the right track. Then the authors show how to adapt this initial effort through a series of stages resulting in the needed application pieces. Along the way in their Guide, Troutman and Hudson deliver insider tips and info that orients the reader by providing the lay of the land and possible pitfalls. “We start them out with writing down their Top Ten accomplishments,” says Troutman. “This approach to writing the narrative ECQs is popular, friendly, doable and results in impressive and on-point leadership stories. Thank you David Letterman for making the idea of ‘the Top 10’ so popular.” The author adds that this method was developed over decades of directly training SES applicants in her workshops. According to the Office of Personnel and Management (OPM), the Senior Executive Service “includes most managerial, supervisory, and policy positions classified above General Schedule (GS) grade 15 or equivalent positions in the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.” Executive jobseekers from federal service, military and private industry are eligible. All current open SES positions are advertised on the USAJOBs website. Troutman advises that applicants study each USAJOBs announcement carefully to see what application materials it requires. Federal agencies now have a choice of using one of three processes for filling SES positions: the traditional application format, the resume-based format, and the accomplishment record. She notes, “In our book, we only address how to write the traditional and resume-based formats. However, with all the techniques and tips we provide, you’ll be prepared to address any of the application formats or requirements that you may encounter.” After the initial assignment of writing the Top Ten Accomplishments, The New SES Application walks the jobseeker through all the intricate steps: Understanding the CCAR (Challenge, Context, Action, and Result) Model for accomplishments and the 28 Leadership Competencies that must be addressed in the application Writing the Traditional Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs) Composing the Technical Qualification narratives (TQs) Building out the Five-Page SES Federal Resume from the two-page executive resume Creating an Executive Cover Letter for OPM (if needed), and Preparing for the Structured Interview Detailed case studies and samples for all the application pieces provide a sense of what’s necessary (many presented as “before” and “after” needed adjustments), the preferred formats, and best practices for producing everything. “The Top Ten accomplishments become the ECQ narratives, resume material, and stories for the structured interview,” Troutman points out. “It’s kind of amazing that this Top Ten method can make such a difference in the presentation of an executive’s past performance. But it works.” Other features of the book include: A “Leadership Journey” chart to consult to see if the jobseeker has the necessary experience and what skills might need to be added to be considered Sample USAJOBs announcements and how to interpret them A sample 5-page executive resume for Theodore Roosevelt (Troutman says she included it because “it’s fun and his accomplishments are so impressive.”) Common reasons applications are rejected and ways to address the objections in order to reapply. Troutman states that the SES applications need to reflect the current challenges in America. “In today’s world, the application pieces need to be written about individual leadership, keeping America safe, staying within budget, and providing Americans the services they need, as well as the daily operations of a large government agency,” she says. It can take a jobseeker 20 hours or more to write the SES application package on their own. Troutman’s firm also offers consulting, writing and training services for time-pressed executives who need support beyond the book. The New SES Application, 2nd Edition is available now in both print and eBook from www.resume-place.com. It will also be available on www.amazon.com beginning in January 2016. Troutman’s award-winning array of other titles on the federal job search can also be found on both websites. Achieve Work-life Balance With Stephen Coveys Four Quadrants

Achieve Work-life Balance With Stephen Coveys Four Quadrants Achieve Work-life Balance With Stephen Coveys Four Quadrants For fathers, getting everything in life to fit together as it should is one of the  biggest life challenges. It can feel like so much of your time is spent in your role as provider: go to work, keep the house and yard in working condition, manage money, and pay bills. Top that with a long commute and running from one childs activity to another, and you get totally consumed during waking hours. The Four Quadrants To keep your life in balance, Dr. Stephen Covey created a Time Management Matrix. The concept helps fathers prioritize their lives  by determining the tasks they need to do versus the ones that they want to do: Quadrant 1 involves important and urgent items that must be dealt with immediately. An exaggeration (or not) may include taking care of a crying baby, putting out a kitchen fire, or making some important calls.Quadrant 2  includes important items that are not urgent. These items do not require your immediate attention, but they need to be planned for. This is a very important quadrant that needs dedicated focus to meet long-term goals.  Exercise, vacation, and planning are examples of items that may be included here. Quadrant 3  is described as urgent but unimportant tasks. These items should be minimized or eliminated completely. Also known as time sucks, interruptions, distractions, and unnecessary calls can give you back some wiggle room for other tasks.Quadrant 4 incorporates unimportant and non-urgent items  last. Similar to the last quadrant, these items should be minimized or removed because they add little to no value. These time wasters are often trivial. Change Your Life With just a little effort, your life and relationships can change by doubling the amount of time spent in Quadrant 2. Its  clear that Quadrant 1 items always get done and Quadrant 4 activities are a waste of time. Take the time to focus on Quadrant 2 by eliminating some Quadrant 4 activities first. Invest in your personal growth by emphasizing your spiritual focus, reading uplifting materials, and considering how to better live your life. Additionally, setting personal goals, evaluating progress, and planning your activities around those goals will give greater focus to your life and help you achieve more with less effort and less time lost. Finally, putting activities that build relationships with your children into Quadrant 2 will help create more  positive and trusting relationships  that avoid problems later on. Prioritize  Activities Focusing on Quadrant 2 activities, using time found by eliminating Quadrant 4 activities, makes all the difference in what you can accomplish in life. Planning and giving higher priority to the  things that matter most  will allow a busy father with many life demands to make good  decisions,  balance work and life better, and live a more abundant life. Quadrant 2 activities should be programmed into your daily schedule. Whether developing a  personal purpose statement  or setting personal and  family goals, fathers can learn how to thrive. The first step is to plan your time every week and make some room in your schedule for other Quadrant 2 activities, like the following: Reading scripture, praying, and meditatingPersonal exercise and nutrition planningDate  nights with your partnerFamily nights and recreation  with the  kidsJob interviews and career planningVisualizing, reading, and writing affirmationsJournaling A Success Story Following The Time Management Matrix can be life-changing. One father shared his personal experience with  his early mentor, Dr. Covey, during his college years: I am fortunate to count Dr. Covey as one of my early mentors and university professors. Even before he published his wildly successful book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Covey was teaching graduate students at Brigham Young University the importance of time management and work-life balance. The first time I saw the Time Management Matrix (also known as the Four Quadrants) was on a white board in a large classroom at BYU. Dr. Covey drew a box on the board divided by a horizontal line and a vertical line into four quadrants. Across the top, he labeled the two columns Urgent and Not Urgent. Then he labeled the two rows Important and Not Important. Then he labeled the quadrants with the numbers one  through four, starting at the top left and ending at the bottom right. Then,  he asked the class to help him fill in some activities that fit into each quadrant. The first one was easy: urgent and important. One student said, Cramming for your tests. He was right, it was urgent a nd it was important. Dr. Covey then asked, Where should we put doing the required reading and keeping up with class assignments? Students responded, Quadrant 2: important but not urgent. We next went to Quadrant 3:  urgent but not important. A ringing telephone was one response. Perhaps, Dr. Covey said, but what if it was the big job offer you had been waiting for? That is for sure a Quadrant 1 call, the student responded. When he got to Quadrant 4, activities in that quadrant came fast and furious. Talking with my roommate until 2:00 a.m. one suggested. Staying for the fourth quarter when BYU is ahead by 24 said another. Finally, Dr. Coveys graduate assistant passed out a paper with the four quadrants and asked us to estimate how much of the 128 hours in our week was spent in each quadrant. I had to admit that I was spending a lot of time in Quadrants 1 and 4, some in Quadrant 3, and almost none in Quadrant 2.Dr. Covey then suggested some ways that we could spend more time in Quadrant 2. Careful planning, spiritual renewal, goal setting, spending time on important relationships, journal writing, and more were all important but not urgent. No one demanded an accounting for these things. But his counsel was to plan our time so that Quadrant 2 activities came first.

The Advantages of Disadvantages

The Advantages of Disadvantages The Advantages of Disadvantages How challenges can propel great performances. Many great achievements can be traced back to overcoming disadvantages. Many great failures can be traced back to a lack of disadvantages.Be careful about complaining about your disadvantages and about assuming that your advantages will guarantee you success in life. Disadvantages can help propel you to see your situation from different perspectives and find approaches to succeed that you might not otherwise have found. Advantages can blind you from the necessity to keep searching for better ways to pursue success. In the 1770’s American colonialists had several disadvantages. They were being excessively taxed, they had virtually no representative voice in how they were being treated, and they had almost a non-existent military to protect them from the British military. They lost battle after battle in the Revolutionary War. However, their disadvantages forced them to focus on what they could do. When the British military attacked them in America, they kept running away. The size of their country and their commitment to outlast the British became two of their greatest advantages. Eventually the British got tired of spending money and hurting their own men while chasing the Americans in a land so far away from their main homeland. When the early Americans were piecing together their form of government, the last thing they wanted was to be under the rule of a small handful of people. So they created something truly revolutionary: representative government. This new form of governing a nation has spread around the world in the past 235 years. When Ralph Lauren started his business in 1967 he had certain disadvantages to overcome. Namely, he had no money, no store, no name recognition, no experience, and one client. Bloomingdale’s agreed to sell his ties. However, these disadvantages allowed him to steadily focus on one part of his business at a time: 1968 first full line of Ralph Lauren menswear, 1969 first Polo Ralph Lauren store, 1972 first Ralph Lauren Polo shirt, 1972 first full Ralph Lauren womenswear line, and 1978 first Ralph Lauren fragrances.Go to his site to see how his business has been steadily built over the years. If he had unlimited resources and scores of stores asking for his products when he first started, he may have never created each piece of his business with such care and attention to detail. If he had tons of money to spend and stores to fill up with products, he may have moved so fast that he may have choked on his advantages.Your Story of Overcoming Disadvantages and ChallengesThe list of people converting disadvantages into great successes is endless and inspiring. Now turn toward yourself. Write down one great success you’ve had in your lifetime. Then write down the disadvantages or challenges that you had to overcome to achieve that success. Then identify how those disadvantages forced you to look at your situation differently and ultimately help you achieve success . Here are three questions to help you organize your thoughts: What is one great success you’ve had in your lifetime? What disadvantages or challenges did you have to overcome in order to achieve your success? How did those disadvantages or challenges help you to find an alternative approach to achieve success? Your Next Story of Overcoming Disadvantages and ChallengesNow I want you to focus on the present. There are massive challenges being faced by every business in the world right now: severely tight and conservative banks, an exceptionally sluggish economy, very wary customers and potential customers, and other specific challenges for your organization that you can add to the list.Take the time to answer these three questions: What disadvantages or challenges is your business facing right now? What alternative approaches to achieving success are those disadvantages and challenges forcing you to consider? Specifically, what will you do to convert your disadvantages to advantages? The absolute key here is to see that your disadvantages and challenges may very well be guiding you to extraordinary success. The essential attitude is to stay open to where you are being guided to rather than getting mired down in complaining about the obstacles in the way of your current approach. When I started my business consulting firm in January 1998 I had a variety of disadvantages, which I am now very grateful for. I had no business background. (My degree was in engineering and my jobs were as a college soccer coach and high school math teacher.) Therefore, I had no business industry experience. (I couldn’t build my business by being an “industry expert.”) I had virtually no business connections, except for those business people that my high school students were related to or my friends and family knew of. (The first CEO I met was at a wedding when my wife, Barb, was a bridesmaid.) Therefore, there was no one to pave the way for me through a series of clients. I did not overcome a personal tragedy, win a Super Bowl, or write a best-selling book. I had not been on a tv show. I did not even know what a speakers bureau meant. These “disadvantages” forced me to think about how I was going to get work. Since I had no industry experience, I was forced to be open to working with people at companies from all kinds of different industries. (I’ve now worked with clients in over seventy-five different industries. My cross-industry experience has become an asset for my business.) Since I was not well-known and had no compelling personal story of triumph to share, I had to focus on developing very practical, user-friendly ideas that people could use right away to improve their performance and results. My challenges forced me to read and read and read and to observe business managers and executives for thousands of hours in the flow of their daily business work lives in order to understand what made some business people successful and others very unsuccess ful. After I had spent ten years primarily as an Executive Coach, my biggest client said they were no longer going to use any outside coaches. This guided me to focus on keynote speaking and seminars and book writing. Since I had no amazing personal stories of overcoming tragedies or winning the World Series, I focused on teaching my ideas through ordinary everyday stories that people could easily relate to.As I look to the future, I’m focused not only on the advantages that I’ve developed, but much more so on understanding what my current disadvantages and challenges are guiding me to consider as an alternative approach to achieving my objectives.I very much encourage you to write down all of the disadvantages and challenges that you are facing right now. Then work to identify what advantages those disadvantages are forcing you to uncover. If you feel everything is perfect, then I want you to set for yourself a compelling challenge that will cause you to have to overcome certai n obstacles. It’s unhealthy for your business to think you have the world by the tail and have nothing to overcome. That can actually lead you on a path to failure because you may very well stop looking for alternative ways to achieve success.Remember: your greatest advantages may very well come from your current disadvantages.

How to know you need a mental health day (and how to spend it)

How to know you need a mental health day (and how to spend it) How to know you need a mental health day (and how to spend it) If you’re a full-time employee with benefits, then you most likely have the ability to take sick days - you know, for your physical health. No one on your team bats an eye when you email to tell them you’ve come down with a nasty stomach bug or a head-pounding cold, but what about when it comes to your  mental health? You may not have considered taking a sick day for your mental health, but we highly recommend it.You don’t need to suffer from a psychological condition to take a mental health day. Sometimes you just need one for your sanity. If you’re finding yourself perpetually distracted, facing a creative block or just feeling burnt out, a day just for  you  could be exactly what the doctor ordered.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Here are some signs that you could use a mental health day:1. You’re dreading going into workUnless this sort of thing is happening on the regular (in which case you should consider  looking for a new job), having the occasional I-really-can’t-do-this-work-thing day is normal. Whatever the reason is that you’re not thrilled about showing up to the office, a  single  mental health day could be what you need to recharge your batteries and get back on track.2. Your mindset is stunting your productivitySome days, you wake up and you just  know  that you don’t have it in you to get your work done. Taking a day for yourself could amp back up your mental capacity and productivity.3. You have a (rare) awful night’s sleep and you just can’t focusSleep is  so  important - we can’t stress that enough. While regular sleep deprivation is a bigger issue, the rare night when you get no shuteye can make you feel like you have nothing to give the world. You have two options in this situation: to  be the “hero”  and show up to work even though you know you won’t function well, or call a spade a spade and take t he day to catch up. We suggest the latter, considering that even one night of  sleep deprivation  can significantly  decrease  your cognitive function.4. You legitimately need a day to get your shit togetherWhether you just suffered a fairly traumatic experience (like a messy breakup or the death of a pet) or you’re just behind on your taxes, taking a day to get your shit together is absolutely valid. Life is messy, and sometimes your personal life requires the same attention as your office life. Take a day, and give yourself a break. How To Make The Most Of Your DayThere really is no “perfect” way to spend your mental health day, since your circumstances are unique to you. That said, be intuitive and spend your day doing things that will ease your stress and make you happy. Some pointers? Make sure your day is productive - we know, watching Netflix in your pitch-black bedroom surrounded by blankets sounds amazing, but your brain benefits from stimulation. Take a walk around yo ur neighborhood, clean your place or, if you need to get your shit together, spend the day doing just that. And as we said, don’t forget to do something that calms your nerves and brings you a sense of joy. Read for an hour, take a long bath or blast your favorite playlist.Regardless of why you’re taking a mental health day, make the most of it so that you’re back on your feet when it’s over. If one day simply isn’t enough, consider a longer vacation. And, if that won’t do the trick, it might be time to jump ship from your company or talk to your boss about your situation. The bottom line: take care of yourself. Your health - physical and mental - is a priority. Plus, your mind deserves a break from time to time. This article first appeared on Swirled.

Learn About the Benefits of Being a Military Officer

Learn About the Benefits of Being a Military Officer Learn About the Benefits of Being a Military Officer Most enlisted recruiting efforts focus on an occupational model and other benefits,  but recruiting material for would-be officers tends to be more ambiguous, focusing on intangibles benefits like pride, sense of duty, and prestige. A banner on GoArmy.com’s front page asks, “Can you rise to the challenge?”The work can’t get done without outstanding enlisted men and women, but the gap in responsibility between entry-level enlisted and a newly-commissioned lieutenant is pretty wide. It just wouldn’t do to have junior officers endangering the lives and welfare of their troops because they joined under the pretenses of a “me” culture.Even the most selfless professional needs to look out for his or her own welfare, as well. If you’re torn between enlisting in the military or becoming a commissioned officer and want the scoop on “what’s in it for me,” here are a few of the tangible benefits officers enjoy. 01 Educational Opportunities The Post-9/11 GI Bill’s expanded benefits are very attractive if you’re not sure how to pay for higher education. Officers need a college degree just to start the job, so there’s no edge for them when it comes to educational benefits, right?Wrong. There are officer commissioning programs that can help pay for a bachelor’s degree in return for a service commitment. The service academies are tough to get into but offer a tuition-free education. Flunk out or get the boot for an honor violation, though, and you may be on the hook for enlisted service to pay back the tuition they wasted on you.Current college students can also apply for Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarships. You don’t necessarily need a scholarship to participate in ROTC and compete for a commission, but those who can secure the financial award will find it much easier on their wallets. There are even some schools that are entirely dominated by ROTC, like the Virginia Military Institute or Norwich Un iversity.Last but not least, officers that got their commission outside a service academy or ROTC scholarship remain eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which can still be used to get a second bachelor’s, a graduate degree, or even transferred to a spouse or children. 02 Pay Differences The manager makes more than the worker, plain and simple. An enlisted career accrues significant financial benefits with time, but commissioned officers come right out of the gate with more earning power.Consider a brand new private (E-1) and a second lieutenant (O-1.) According to 2012 military pay charts, the lieutenant will start day one with nearly twice the private’s base pay per month, or an annual salary (excluding benefits) of $33,940.80 to the private’s $17,892.Based on average time to promotion for enlisted and officers, assume the best-case scenario four years later: Our private is a sergeant and our lieutenant is a captain (O-3). The captain’s still making about twice as much money, but by now that means an annual salary of $60,372 versus just shy of $30,000.Just remember:Never make a military career decision based solely on pay. Military service isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. If you’re not down with the calling, you’re going to end up disgruntled no matt er how much money they throw at you. These figures completely ignore other benefits like healthcare, life insurance, and housing. All of that comes out-of-pocket in the civilian world, which means every penny of your base pay is inherently more valuable in the service. As executive leaders, officers typically pay more out-of-pocket expenses than their enlisted counterparts, such as the initial cost of uniforms and living expenses at early professional training. 03 Career Flexibility Diverse Experiences A successful officer typically progresses from small unit management to larger and higher commands posts that, while more administrative and political in nature, also afford greater challenge, prestige, and influence.Officers also find themselves taking on more diverse duties and roles instead of just specializing in their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), which could offer refreshing new challenges and changes of scenery throughout a career. A pilot in the Marine Corps, for example, may pull time on the ground as a Forward Air Controller, where he’ll specialize in coordinating airstrikes and other support for the infantry.Officers may also serve as attaches to top brass or civilian officials, or at the top of their careers even become Pentagon officials themselves. If you want to specialize in a certain occupation, a commission might not be for you. With a few exceptions, MOS assignments are often made after you’ve earned your commission and graduated initial training, with more emphasis on the needs of the service than your personal preference. 04 Job Prospects After Service Veteran officers have two big advantages in the job market: a college degree and proven management experience. Though enlisted veterans may also earn degrees, and many are outstanding leaders, it seems a number of major companies are being “vet friendly” by ignoring the enlisted and targeting junior military officers â€"- lieutenants and captains.Michael Dakduk covered the issue in 2010 for the Veteran Journal. This CNN Money article by Brian O’Keefe also explores a similar phenomenon at Walmart and offers some justification from the former commander of US forces in Afghanistan General David Petraeus. While good ol’ Sergeant Luckwaldt here agrees with Dakduk’s reservations about underestimating the enlisted, it doesn’t change the fact that former military officers often have an edge with employers.

4 Networking Event Tips to Help You Make the Most of It

4 Networking Event Tips to Help You Make the Most of It 4 Networking Event Tips to Help You Make the Most of It No matter what career you’re in, or how far up the corporate ladder you’ve climbed, there is one component of job growth that pretty much everyone needs to master- the art of networking. The term networking can mean many things, from keeping in touch with former colleagues to attending actual events that are meant to connect like-minded workers. Whatever form of networking we’re talking about, though, the fact remains that this type of connection can often be intimidating and nerve-wracking. Putting a little thought into and developing a plan or strategy can help take the edge off at the next networking event. Here are a few key things to keep in mind the next time a networking event opportunity arises: 1. Arrive prepped with your elevator pitch. If you’ll be attending an actual networking event in the near future, it helps to take some time beforehand to go over your resume and run through your top achievements so that you can be ready to list them off at a moment’s notice. When it comes to those achievements, the more specific you can be, the better. If you brought in a new account worth a certain amount of money at your last job, or successfully launched a campaign that garnered however many new users, be sure to have those exact numbers on hand so you can spout them off to all those sure-to-be-impressed co-networkers. 2. Store copies of your resume and business cards close by. Nothing says, “I’m not prepared” more than showing up to a networking event without the essentials- meaning copies of your resume and business card. You can have the best conversation with a head honcho and leave her desperate for a further connection by spouting off all your hard-earned successes, but if you have to write your contact information down on a napkin with a pen you borrowed from her because you didn’t have a resume or business card on hand, that will likely be the lasting memory she has of your meeting. 3. Keep your cool. Even if walking into a room full of people is your worst nightmare, try your best to stay calm and relaxed. Prepping ahead of time with the two steps mentioned above will help, since it’s easier to stay relaxed when you know you’re as prepared as possible, but if that’s not enough, take a little extra time throughout the day before your event to do the things that you know put you at ease, like going for a run, getting a massage, grabbing a coffee with a friend, or even taking a nap. 4. Have a follow-up plan. Don’t leave it to the people you meet at networking events to follow up with you regarding potential possibilities, have a plan to follow up with them yourself. Even if someone doesn’t get contact information from you, if you think you could be an asset to them, ask for their contact information and set a reminder to follow up with them in a week to suggest a coffee meeting to further discuss how you might be able to help them achieve their work-related goals. Even if you’re already in a job you love, it’s still important to use professional networks to your benefit. To that end, here are five types of professional networks, and the best ways to use them.
